Holly: Back Pain

I was taken by surprise this morning when, as I was making french toast for Brett, my back went out! Ok, well it didn’t go out while I was cooking exactly. I was making breakfast and Brett wanted to be picked up. I reached down to pick her up (of course). As I did, I felt my back start to give. Then, at the worse time possible, I had to sneeze- TWICE! That was it, my back was done for. I could barely stand. I text my mom and hoped she would see it when she woke up. Oh, did I mention that Brett woke up at 6:15am today instead of her typical 7am wake-up?

My mom immediately called me and rushed over to help. I really was down for the count the entire day. It hurt to lay on my stomach and to stand and to walk. Sitting didn’t (still doesn’t) bother it.

I put an ice pack on my back. Then a heating pad. I sat on the couch forever. Then I went in the hot tub for about 15 minutes. Then, my mom rubbed in some Icy Hot to my back.

I literally have walked around hunched over ALL day. Tonight it seems to be loosening up a bit. I also realized that my upper back was starting to get sore from walking hunched over (the way that hurts my lower back the least).

I feel SO lucky that my mom is right down the street. She was a lifesaver today. I don’t know how I would’ve cared for Brett without her help. A 15-month-old doesn’t understand why you can’t hold her when she wants to be held.

I sure hope I have a miraculous recovery overnight! Plus, I want to be better by Thursday because Brett has her hernia surgery Thursday morning and I want to hold her as much as she wants to be held that day.

    My advise is to use only ice (no heat) and to get one of those clay filled ice packs that last forever and mold onto your back ($20 at a PT office). You can borrow mine if you’d like, it’s awesome. When I broke my tailbone 10 years ago I went to a chiropractor who was highly recommended from a friend. Worst decision ever as he did drops on the table and ended up giving me a disk bulge for life! So be careful when seeing a chiropractor as they just don’t have the correct training as a real doctor would and can actually end up doing more damage sometimes. Anyway…I have lots of back exercises that will help, let me know and I can attempt to explain in an email or show you. I hope the hernia surgery went well today and that little Brett is recovering nicely. Talk to you soon. Katie
