Holly: Finding the Sex of Your Baby
Did you find out the sex of your baby? Even though our first pregnancy was a surprise to us my husband and I agreed immediately that we would not find out the sex of the baby. As my husband says, there are few things that can truly be a surprise in life and this is one of them.
With this second pregnancy we, again, decided that we wouldn’t find out the sex of the baby. When we went in to do the 12 week ultrasound as part of the California Prenatal Screening Program we didn’t even think to tell the ultrasound tech that we didn’t want to know the sex of the baby. The picture that is in the header of this blog is one of the first pictures of the baby.
There I am, laying there, and the tech says, “see that thing sticking up at the end of the abdomen, near the legs?” My hubby and I look at each other and I quickly said, “Um, yeah, but we don’t want to know the sex of the baby.” The tech then said, “well, it looks exactly the same for a boy and a girl at this point. You can’t tell if it’s a boy unless you get a really good picture of the penis.” What do you think? Do you think that is a penis?
Well, we were a bit disappointed by that exchange. I started asking anyone and everyone if it looked like a boy. My sister-in-law was told at 12 weeks that she was having a boy but then at a later ultrasound it was determined she was having a girl so I use that story as my base and have convinced myself that we still don’t know the gender.
During my second ultrasound, around 18 weeks, I asked the ultrasound tech (a different one) what she thought about the occurrence at the previous ultrasound. She confirmed what the previous tech said- the boy and the girl parts look the same at 12 weeks. Here is a picture of the second ultrasound.
As time has passed, I am 24-weeks now, I really want to know the sex. I just want to know if it is a girl or a boy! But, I’ve promised my hubby that we won’t find out so I have about 15 weeks left to wait it out…
