Holly: Weight Gain Update

I just had my 23 week check-up.  Really, it was fairly uneventful (as have all of my check-up’s this pregnancy). That is, until the subject of my weight gain during pregnancy came up.

“Ew, 20 pounds in 23 weeks,” my OB says. Then follows up with, “better lay off of those sugars.” I saved my foul language for the phone call I made to my husband on my way home.

I’m a bit dumbfounded. I do have a sweet tooth when I’m pregnant and have had more than my fair share of cookies, baked goods and ice cream.  In fact, I’m laughing on the inside because on my to the doctor appointment I stopped at McDonald’s for an ice tea and a small french fry… Oh, and did I mention I’m eating potato chips as I’m typing this?

If I have this baby in 15 weeks and gain 1 pound a week until delivery I will have gained 35 pounds during this pregnancy. That is only 5 pounds more than I gained with Brett. Honestly, I’m trying not to be too concerned.

A friend on Facebook said it best: “when you’re pregnant all you have is food- so enjoy it!” I think I’ll follow her advice.

  1. One pound per week is the average (without the mention of added weight from water retention). Seems like your doctor is being a bit too critical since basically you’re right in line with the norm. Enjoy your chips…you’re doing great!!
