Lisa: I DID IT!

Lisa: I DID IT!

As I had described in my previous blog posts, I have been training for a 5k for the past 2 months. The training was an amazing experience in being able to prove to myself that I could do something that I’ve NEVER been able to do, even when I was in tip-top shape.

I am proud to say that I DID IT! I ran my first 5k!!!

My ultimate goal was to run the entire thing without stopping. Like I’ve said before, I have NEVER been a runner. I played soccer for many years, but the distance running had never been a strength, so I didn’t want to pin myself down with a time goal, but really just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it!

I completed the Surf City Run in Huntington Beach, CA on the 4th of July. The crowd was so supportive & cheered us on the entire 3.2 miles. One thing I didn’t anticipate was the entire last mile was UP-HILL! I was running with a good friend & her boyfriend (who are avid runners & ran a 5k that same morning prior to running with me- lol :-) ) & they kept me going when I just wanted to give up during that last 1/2 mile. I truly appreciated their encouragement & support!

Picture: I’m the one in the blue top & black capris (bib: 919), this is at the finish line!

I REACHED MY GOAL! I ran the entire 5k without stopping & I actually finished in a pretty decent time for my first competition~ just over 34 minutes. The first mile of the run was faster then any of my training runs at 9.5 minutes!

Overall I feel like I exceeded my goals & truly enjoyed the experience! As a mom, I feel like it’s important to show my daughter a healthy & active lifestyle by modeling it myself. I hope this is a step in the right direction!

Here are some runner resources if you are thinking about training for a 5k:

If I can do it, YOU CAN DO IT!

Thank you to all our NMO members & readers who have supported me through this journey! Here’s to my next 5k in September :-) …I’m addicted!

  1. Congrats, Lisa!! I LOVE hearing about first races! There are so many positives that come from it; feeling the crowd, pushing harder than you even did in training, realizing that your work pays off, crossing the finish with a smile, knowing that you’ve done something not only great for yourself, but for your family. You are normalizing health, fitness and running attitudes for your daughter. She will grown up thinking that training, getting sweaty, being fit, setting goals and accomplishing them is part of life. How cool is that?! Looking forward to your post about your next 5K in September. Oh, and uphill the last mile? Girlfriend, that’s no easy task – rock on!! ~Laura
