Lisa: Training for a 5k?

I am still 10-15 lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weight and have continued to struggled to lose every lb since my daughter was born. One of the hardest things for me to figure out is how to incorporate exercise into my weekly routine. Similar to one of the current forum posts (click here to view), my schedule is completely crazy because I work full-time outside the home and of course I need to find time to work on this wonderful online community =).

Prior to getting pregnant, I would work out all the time. My weight would fluctuate every few years within the same 10 lbs, but I was never THIS overweight. I would have called myself athletic and enjoyed working out. Now I feel like I barely have any time with my daughter or husband so on the weekends I feel guilty leaving them to go workout.

I am now contemplating training for a 5k so I can get back into shape, but I fear that I will not stick with a training plan because I will find excuse after excuse not to stick with it (anyone out there relate or am I just completely crazy!?).

So, I’ve decided to put my fate in your hands…

If 20 people encourage me to start training (& commit) to doing a 5k by ‘Leaving a Reply’ below, then I will commit to all of our NMO members that I will training AND complete a 5k by October 2010!!! That of course comes with the understanding that I’ll blog about my experience every step of the way!

I am leaving the decision power up to all of you so I can stop making excuses and start getting back into shape….

Picture: This is me at my wedding 5 years ago…I bet most of you mommies who know me only post-baby would have never recognized me! Yikes!

  2. Claire says:

Go for it, Lisa! I’ve been thinking of doing the same, so if you want company on the 5k, just let me know.

I don’t know if it’ll work for you, but… Lately my husband and I have been going on a run together with the baby in the stroller on the weekend. Baby likes napping in the stroller and we get some distraction-free time together.

  3. Go for it! We’ll be waiting to hear how it goes! :-)

  16. I think committing to a 5k is a great motivation and sticking it out there and promising it to your blog readers will help you with sticking to it. I started to run when I was trying to lose the weight when my daughter was born. Went through the same agony of trying to find time. I did it, little by little. Now my daughter is 33, and I am a running coach and triathlete and fitter than most teenagers. The point is that you can do it. A suggestion: running will only help you drop the weight, but you have to monitor food intake too. FoodDiary.com allows you to journal what you eat and it subtracts for exercise. This will help motivate you to get in those miles.
One more thing. Check out all the running moms at Laura McClain’s RunMommaRun site. Lots of support there from running moms:)
