Special Guest Blogger: Are You Almost A MILF…

I’ve had a few surprising comments and reactions come my way since becoming pregnant that have cracked me up.  I’m pregnant and single so people usually don’t know how to react if you aren’t coupled off or married.  Thus, the reactions and comments range from, “Congratulations!!!” to “Congratulations???”  People crack me up.

One guy friend said, “Lanay, I thought you were more careful than that…” in a somewhat disappointed voice.  I had to remind myself in the split second before I reacted that he is a friend and I shouldn’t knock him upside the head.

Another surprising comment on my pregnancy occurred when I was first pregnant, I had a friend in town visiting from Boston for the Tales of the Cocktail event in New Orleans.  We met the previous year at the same event, and I showed him around town to some places he would not likely find on his own.  He wanted to make that a tradition and meet for drinks.

He didn’t yet know I was pregnant since I had not made a formal announcement at that point, but I wanted to go out and didn’t feel like getting into it over the phone.  We met at a place called CURE on Freret St., a non-smoking bar that has wonderful bartenders that mix up the best mocktails (non-alcoholic beverages) ever.

As we ordered, I explained my situation since he raised an eyebrow at my mocktail order.  We caught up on each others’ lives, and he shared how just recently he dated a woman that was pregnant though he didn’t know about it at the time.   After he found out, he said he might have continued dating her if she’d been up for it.  Her pregnancy didn’t seem to bother him and gave me some insight at to how men may not be as concerned as I thought about dating a pregnant woman – not that I was in any way looking.

As the night continued, I realized he was definitely flirting with me despite my situation.  I marveled at that and enjoyed the attention.  When I dropped him off at a smokey music venue called Le Bon Temps Roule, he tried all he could to convince me to join him.  He even said that he hadn’t quite given up on the idea of seducing me yet as he got out the car.  I couldn’t believe it, but I loved it all the same :)

Minutes after I dropped him off, I received a text from him that said, “Pretty Soon, you’ll be a MILF…”  LOL!
A MILF! – I hardly realized I was going to be a mom before that point, so I certainly hadn’t considered that title.
For those of you that don’t know this term, a MILF is an acronym for a “Mom I’d Like to @#$%!”  Crude, I know, but there it is.

Now, I’m wondering at what point you become a mom or a MILF.  Is it the moment you conceive or when your child is actually born?  Things that make you go hmm…

Regardless of how people react, I’m very happy to be on this journey and consider myself very lucky.
